DESCRIPTION

Built in 1945 for the French National Railway (SNCF) by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as one of a series of locomotives (141R class) designed to aid in the rebuilding of the war torn French rail system. Based on the poplar North American "Mikado" class of locomotive but modified to meet European clearances, this series of locomotive proved successful for its reliability and low operating cost.  Locomotive #568 was based in Belfort France where it was operated to the Swiss frontier station of Delle, Boulougne and was regularly assigned to heavy sleeping car expresses on the first leg of their journey as far as Amiens (the coal and steel center of Sarreguemines in Lorraine). Rebuilt in 2012 by the current owner and moved to Switzerland, the #568 and tool car have operated in many steam excursions over the famed Swiss Gotthard route. (The steeply graded main freight and passenger artery linking northern and southern Europe across the Swiss alps). #568 is a fully operational locomotive capable of operation over the entire Swiss rail system. With some modifications and certification work the locomotive could be imported to North America and would make a great addition to any tourist operation.

NOTE: This locomotive last operated a main line steam excursion in October 2012, it has been kept oiled, drained and stored in a heated building since last operated.

The sales price includes the locomotive & tool car.
