Built in 1926 by Pullman for the Southern Railroad as
business car #11(
photo). Sold into private ownership in the 1980's
and rebuilt for operation on Amtrak and renamed "Hampton
Roads"(
photo). Sold again in 1994 to current owner who
has operated the car in short line service, Amtrak
certification has not been renewed. As you walk into the car
from the platform end you enter the observation lounge that
will comfortably seat 6 passengers. As you walk down the
hall way you pass by two master rooms both equipped with
their own restroom and shower and at the end of the hall
there is a general toilet also equipped with a shower. From
the hall you enter the dining room that will seat up to eight
guest and there are also two Murphy beds that will fold down
from the wall on each side of the room. From the dining room
you enter the service corridor with the crew room, pantry &
kitchen. Some of French Broad River's mechanical details
include: Steel construction, H couplers, roller bearings,
D-22 valves w/comp shoes, 480v/230v 3 phase electrical
system, 27 pin, MU, R-22 Stone Safety air conditioning unit,
emergency lights, markers, pa system, updated kitchen, gold
plated platform rails, track lights, bolted pedestal trucks,
full Amtrak style HEP, rubber diaphragms, ISSH, truck
mounted cylinders, heat, Microphor processing tank, good
wheels, wired for generator but not currently equipped, 230v
3 phase standby plugs, COT&S is out of date, this car is on
roller bearings and can move on it's own wheels with a fresh
COT&S.
