Great Northern Business Car
A-18

The A-18 was built as a wood car in 1900 by American Car &
Foundry for the legendary James J. Hill who founded the
Great Northern Railroad. In later years the Great Northern
Railroad added steel sheeting to give the car a more modern
appearance. As you walk in from the observation platform you
enter a spacious observation lounge decorated in original
wood work with intricate carvings that are reminiscence of
the golden age of rail travel. As you proceed down the hall
you pass two state rooms, shower and then you enter into the elegant
dining room, with side mirrors and hand crafted moldings.
From the dining room you enter the service passage way with
a bathroom, crew room, large pantry and kitchen. The car was sold to
the current owner in 1959 and is in original condition, it
is in occasional excursion use on a shortline railroad and
it has been maintained in operational condition. The
A-18 has been received regular maintenance since it's
retirement from the Great Northern and is in museum quality
