Built in 1928
by Canadian Car & Foundry for the Canadian National Railroad as a compartment,
library, observation lounge car for service on CN's St. Lawrence Special.
Rebuilt in 1953 into a executive office car for the officials of the CN and sold
into private ownership in 1981. Upgrades for Amtrak certification began in 1991
and today the Metis is fully Amtrak certified and self contained. The interior
floor plan consist of a spacious observation lounge paneled in Honduran
Mahogany, a large entertainment center with satellite TV and a BOSE stereo
system, seating for 8+ passengers ( total car can seat 16 passengers for day
trips) and large observation windows. Next to the
lounge is a compact but efficient kitchen with microwave, convection oven, cook
top, conventional oven, garbage disposal and refrigerator. Next is a
elegant dining room with built in china cabinet, custom built dining room table
and fold a way crew bed. As you leave the dining room and proceed down the hall
you will find two master suites sleeping two each and a connecting shower/bath.
There are also two compartments each sleeping two and at the end of the hall a
large shower/restroom/dressing room. Some of the cars mechanical details
include: Full Amtrak Certification, rebuilt trucks, good wheels, H couplers, HEP, 27 pin, MU, marker lights, roller bearings, truck mounted cylinders,
ISSH, track lights, MR line, satellite TV, under car storage lockers, 60 KW
STADCO generator, freeze protection, air conditioning, holding tanks, rubber
diaphragms, electric floor and overhead heat, emergency lights, water raising
compressor, large fuel tank, large water tanks, fully stocked with linen and
custom china and ready for service!
