Offered for sale is an original 1947 New York
Central 48 seat diner, fresh from a one year rebuild. This classic
car, is 100 percent complete and all original in its appearance.
Car is Amtrak compatible, however was never an Amtrak owned car and
just recently had a PC1, PC1A, PC1B, PC2 and PC5 ( Amtrak
inspections which include current inspection along with the 40 year
truck rebuilding and rollout inspection ). Car is totally self
contained with 52 KW STADCO diesel generator, 250 gallon diesel fuel
tank, air compressor ( for water raising system and air activated
doors ), batteries for air activated doors and required marker
lights. Car has 26CDX brake system, new 8 ton air conditioning
system, complete freeze protection system, and has run only 3000
miles from its complete rebuild. Trucks are tread brake, with
Timken "EE" bearings. All wheels are AAR type D36 and all wheels are
hub stamped.. All wheels have excellent contours and were freshly
certified by Progress Rail. ( see wheel measurements ) Car has "H"
couplers at both ends, along with newly installed rubber tube
diaphragms. Car is Amtrak "A" clearance ( no restrictions )
Car has all new glazing ( green tinted per NYC
specifications ) and gaskets and is double glazed. Entire car body
has been mechanically polished to give the car a like new
appearance. Unique to this rare class of cars is the fact that this
car was built with a quarter vestibule at the dining room end of the
car ( most diners do not have a vestibule ) therefore allowing this
car to be run without the need for a companion car. The interior
of this car has been restored to its near as delivered condition,
from the selection of paints ( IMRON ) to match the original New
York Central color schemes, to fabrics and carpet. Car has all
twelve of its original dining room tables, along with all 48 of its
original aluminum dining room chairs. Car has been totally
reupholstered, has all new window sills, new wool carpeting, new
rubber floor, and so closely resembles the builders photographs that
it is truly uncanny. Car has overhead heat, along with electric
baseboard heat inside the original stainless steel heat enclosures.
Car has rebuilt Frigidaire compressors for interior food
refrigeration, and all original refrigerators and freezers are in
place ( as built ) . Original air activated door operators have
been rebuilt and operate smoothly ( end doors open via air when you
push the "push" bar. ) The electrical system is equipped with a
rebuilt 480v locker utilizing North West Rail Electric HVAC
controls.
The kitchen is complete and is original with the
exception, that the original wood / presto log stove has been
removed and restaurant grade Vulcan ovens have been installed (
double cooking ovens ) along with a large Vulcan double chamber
warming oven. In addition, a Garland griddle, along with 2 Garland
pot warmers have been installed, and the entire area has been
trimmed in stainless, to give it a fresh "as delivered" appearance.
The car has a 480 volt large hot water heater, and includes
commercial microwave ovens, a Bunn high capacity restaurant coffee
maker, and all the faucets are T&S restaurant grade.
The car has a brand new "as delivered from Budd"
appearance, from its automobile quality paint on the interior, to
its exterior lettering Car has stereo system with speakers
installed in original Budd grilles and satellite radio throughout.
All original Budd wood blinds have been rebuilt and refinished and
operate smoothly.
This car is ready for instant service, and
recently completed its first service on the New River NRHS
excursions along with excursions sponsored by the North Carolina
Museum of Transportation and the Watuga Chapter NRHS.
Car is in excellent condition, ready for mainline
or tourist railroad service. Car is a high capacity diner and has a
modern mechanical, electrical and food service kitchen, making it
ready for immediate service. This restoration of this car is
without question "museum quality" yet the car has been returned to
main line service and is ready to run on Amtrak.
Car is on live rail, easily switched to Amtrak,
registered in UMLER and has a fresh COT&S.
