Built in 2007 by Republic Locomotive Works as  RX500 industrial switchers, these units are built to be a replacement for the EMD SW1000 & SW 1500 type locomotives. Both units were delivered but have never been used, both prime movers are started on a regular basis to keep systems lubricated. They  are considered to be "GREEN" locomotives (Tier 3) and have very low emissions. Both units can be disassembled into two sections and easily trucked or loaded on flat cars, re-assembly time is approx 4 hrs. Both units employ AC traction systems which produces a 100% more adhesion then traditional DC systems. Some of the units mechanical features include: AC Traction system for heavy yard switching which virtually eliminates wheel slip and slide, inexpensive to operate and maintain, brushless motors and alternators, low emissions and fuel consumption, equivalent to a DC unit about 50% larger, uses antifreeze to ease winter operation, 144,000 lbs weight, 34' L x 10' W x 13' H, maximum tractive effort @ 35% adhesion 50,400 lbs, continuous tractive effort 50,400 lbs, max speed 10 mph, Cummins QSX15 engine, 600 HP, 480 volt 3 phase  traction alternator, 3 phase induction traction motors, 24 volt DC batteries, 400 gal fuel tank, dynamic braking, independent & automatic brakes, two cylinder reciprocating air compressor, electronic speed control and can be set from 0-10 mph, anti slosh control to minimize sloshing in partially filled tank cars, can produce 480v 400KW of standby power, aux outlets for 110vac & 12 vdc, Cattron remote control with man down feature, PC based control & diagnostics system, MU compatible, cab air conditioning & heat, self feeding graphite wheel lubricators. NOTE: These units do not meet FRA regulations and were designed for the industrial could be candidates for an FRA waiver.
