New York Central Business Car "Hiram"


Built in 1923 as a 10 section/observation lounge by Pullman and named Mt. Desert. Operated in general pool service until sold to the New York Central Railroad, after extensive rebuilding the car emerged from the NYC shops as business car #20. Rebuilt by the NYC and modernized in the 1940's, rebuild including the installation of new smooth side sheets and streamlined roof. Retired by the railroad in the 1960's and sold into private ownership. Some of the mechanical details include: Fair body & roof, H couplers, track lights, APEE bearings, comp shoes, custom built General Castings OSSH trucks (ordered by NYC, some of the best riding trucks around), good wheels, body mounted cylinders, DC electrical system, air conditioning, steam and hot water (Vapor oil fired Watchman) heat, UC valves, rubber diaphragms, original interior (see video for virtual tour), car weight 170,600lbs, Truck type: K-11XR 1963 6 wheel trucks- last ever made by General Steel Casting, Madison, Illinois C-1963 for New York Central.
